Aasha, meaning “hope” in Hindi, is a one-of-a-kind kantha quilt created in collaboration with artisans in the village of Sima Nagar, West Bengal.

Made from three layers, the outer layers are handloomed cotton, while a repurposed sari sits within, revealed softly when held up to the light. This hidden layer brings an added depth to the piece, carrying a quiet story within the cloth itself.

The surface is stitched using a continuous, freehand kantha stitch. The zigzag pattern moves across the fabric in green, red, blue, black, and yellow, forming a rhythmic, multicoloured composition.

Each piece is stitched without templates, allowing the pattern to develop organically through the hand. Small variations and irregularities are part of the process, reflecting the natural rhythm of the stitch.

Due to the use of handloomed cotton and a zero-waste approach, joining seams may be visible within the quilt.

Kantha

Kantha is a centuries-old stitching tradition from the Bengal region, spanning present-day West Bengal and Bangladesh.

Originally created within the home, layers of worn cloth were stitched together using small running stitches to form quilts for everyday use. What began as a practical act of reuse became something more, a quiet expression of care, resourcefulness, and creativity.

Today, this practice continues as a way of preserving both craft and a philosophy rooted in renewal, where nothing is wasted and every piece carries a past into the present.
